A bit about us
Unlike many modern-day pubs, we’re rather keen on games! In the bar, you’ll find board games such as Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble, chess, backgammon, crib, and shove ha’penny. We have an outdoor pétanque terrain too. Why not come along and join the pub team! Our two annual pétanque tournaments are great fun.
We have a lot going on
Live music is very much a part of life here at The Mutton. Keep an eye on our Events page so as not to miss out on our cocktail evening, gigs, jam sessions and charity quiz evenings.
Near us
The Shoulder of Mutton is within walking distance of Strumpshaw Hall and its famous Steam Museum, where you can see the UK’s largest collection of steam engines and fairground memorabilia. Strumpshaw Hall offers year-round camping facilities, providing wonderful opportunities for ramblers and bird watchers. Strumpshaw Fen RSPB Nature Reserve is also just a short walk away.
The beautiful village of Strumpshaw
We think Strumpshaw is a unique place.
You can see the sea from Strumpshaw. It is the highest point in the Norfolk Broads & allegedly the second highest point in Norfolk. St Peter’s Church tower is the highest placed tower in Norfolk.
From the late 1790’s Strumpshaw hill hosted a repeater station in the shutter telegraph linking the Admiralty in London with Great Yarmouth.
The village is intrinsically linked to the famous brewing family The Whitbreads. Rev Edmund Salter Whitbread was incumbent at St Peter’s from 1833 to 1890. His grandfather was the half brother of Samuel Whitbread, the founder of Whitbread Brewery.
In 1755, Boxing Day morning, landowner William Black gave Corn out to villagers from the church porch. This tradition carries on to this day!
You’re guaranteed a warm welcome
We look forward to your visit. And don’t forget – we’re dog friendly, horse & steam engine friendly!
